He graduated from Eagle Pass schools to join the army in September 1942. Emilio was T-5 radio operator for the 761stMilitary Police, and was stationed in the Pacific Northwest, including Alaska.
He received his electrical engineering degree at the University of Houston, working at a radio station and later began his distinguished career at NASA for the following 30 plus years. He moved back to Eagle Pass and married Gloria M. Barrientos. He will be remembered as a humble devoted religious men always a gentleman. Emilio lived his life with a smile and incredible sense of humor. He is survived by his stepchildren Rene, Diana, Nelda and Patricia Barrientos and family and by his nephew Robert Rodriguez and family from San Antonio, numerous nephews and nieces and friends from all walks of life. Frank Burgett a close friend from its NASA days said “I was lucky to have had Rod’s friendship. He always made the day brighter.” Visitation was held Wednesday, May 17, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Rosary at 7:00 p. m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church.  Interment followed at the Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Cemetery. SIXTO VALDEZ,entered eternal rest on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the age of 74 surrounded by his loved ones. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Estela Valdez; 2 Sons: Efrain Valdez and Benjamin Valdez; 3 Daughters: Abigail Garza, Maria E. Perez and Natali Valdez; 1 Brother: Arturo Valdez. Sixto was also survived by 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 18, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. service at 7:00 p. m.
