A key item on Tuesday's EPISD Board Meeting was the restructuring of the members of the board where Lupita Fuentes was named as the new President of the Board of Trustees.

The motion was made by Board Member Rudy Bowles.

Hilda Martinez was selected as the new Vice-President and Dr. Hector Alvarez was selected as Secretary.

In addition the Eagle Pass High School Lady Eagles were recognized for their accomplishment of reaching the fourth round of the State Playoffs this season.

Eagle quarterback and State Qualifying track performer Ty Chisum was also presented with a certificate of recognition for advancing for the second year in a row for the State Track Meet in the triple jump.

EPHS Salutatorian Hugo Garcia was recognized for being named to the 2015 District 29-AAAAAA All Academic Soccer Team.

When the actual meeting commenced, a presentation was given by David Gonzalez on the Unlimited Tax Refunding Bonds which, according to Gonzalez, saved the district in excess of $800,000.00.

"By going out and financing the existing bonds, we were able to qualify for a lower interest rate," said Trustee Ignacio Saucedo, "In the long run it will save the district anywhere from $800,000.00-$900,000.00."

Another very interesting item was that of HB5 which the Texas legislature passed some time ago where a committee of teachers, administrators and central office staff had to conduct an analysis of the school district in areas ranging from fine arts, physical education, 21st century workforce development program, community and parental involvement, dropout prevention strategies, bilingual education, educational programs for GT students and compliance with statutory reporting and policy requirements among others.

The committee gave the EPISD an acceptable rating.

"Each category carries a point system," added Saucedo, "We rated ourselves as acceptable which can be anywhere from 65-80%."

The rating is based many aspects of our district as Mr. Saucedo commented that the analysis shows that there is room for improvement and he also agreed that the instrument which has been provided is a good way to gauge the progress in areas that the state highlighted.

An action item on the agenda called for the renovation of the ventilation system at the High School which will alleviate the mold problem and make for a healthier environment for both work and learning.

"The contingency is that we're on pace for a healthier facility and a conducive work environment.  We were able to go out and obtain a ventilation system Eagle Pass High School does not have which will alleviate the mold problems there."

The cost for the project is approximately $150,000.00 and Davis Powell will be in charge of the project.

A vote came down on an item regarding classified employees possibly serving as coaches for district sports teams which did not pass by a unanimous vote.

What did pass was the item on the request to approve the naming of the baseball field located at the Student Activity Center to Polo Moncada Baseball Stadium which passed 6-1.

"This is something we set a precedent on with the naming of Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in that the board would take this on a case by case basis," concluded the former board president, "The gentleman is deserving of it.  He's an institution in terms of baseball in this community and is definitely deserving of the honor."

$ 800,000.00.

$ 800,000.00- $ 900,000.00."
