In observance of National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW), March 23-27, 2015 and with 146 people killed in Texas work zone crashes last year – an increase of more than 20 percent from 2013 – the Texas Department of Transportation urges drivers to slow down, pay attention and be extra cautious when driving through work zones and construction areas.

Traveling motorists should pay extra attention to the work taking place on state and county roadways, and city streets not only during this national observance period but at all times while traveling   Speeding and inattention are the most cited causes of work zone crashes, and one in three work zone crashes is a rear-end collision. Crashes and fatalities in work zones are preventable. Work zone safety is in the hands of all of us who drive.

National Work Zone Awareness Week is an initiative started in 1999 and conducted each spring by the Federal Highway Administration to bring awareness to work zone safety issues. TxDOT is airing statewide radio ads, as well as TV and radio public service announcements. The messages will be offering safety tips for motorists to help them be safe and drive smart in work zones or pay the cost.
